seorang raja yang terkenal di Kediri. Karena wajahnya yang cantik jelita dan
sikapnya yang lemah lembut banyak para pangeran dan raja-raja yang ingin
meminangnya untuk dijadikan sebagai istri.
Namun sayang Dewi Sanggalangit nampaknya belum berhasrat untuk berumah tangga. Sehingga membuat pusing kedua orang tuanya. Padahal kedua orang tuanya sudah sangat mendambakan hadirnya seorang cucu. “Anakku, sampai kapan kau akan menolak setiap pangeran yang datang melamarmu?” tanya Raja pada suatu hari. “Ayahanda… sebenarnya hamba belum berhasrat untuk bersuami. Namun jika ayahanda sangat mengharapkan, baiklah. Namun hamba minta syarat, calon suami hamba harus bisa memenuhi keinginan hamba.” “Lalu apa keinginanmu itu?” “Hamba belum tahu…” “Lho? Kok aneh…?” sahut Baginda. “Hamba akan bersemedi minta petunjuk Dewa. Semacam tarian yang diiringi tabuhan dan gamelan. Dilengkapi dengan barisan kuda kembar sebanyak seratus empat puluh ekor. Nantinya akan dijadikan iringan pengantin. Terakhir harus dapat menghadirkan binatang berkepala dua.” “Wah berat sekali syaratmu itu!” sahut Baginda. Meski berat syaratnya itu tetap diumumkan kepada segenap khalayak ramai. Siapa saja boleh mengikuti sayembara itu. Tidak peduli para pangeran, putera bangsawan atau rakyat jelata. Para pelamar yang tadinya menggebu-gebu untuk memperistri Dewi Sanggalangit jadi ciut nyalinya. Banyak dari mereka yang mengundurkan diri karena merasa tak sanggup memenuhi permintaan sang Dewi. Akhirnya tinggal dua orang yang menyatakan sanggup memenuhi permintaan Dewi Sanggalangit. Mereka adalah Raja Singabarong dari Kerajaan Lodaya dan Raja Kelanaswandana dari Kerajaan Bandarangin. Baginda Raja sangat terkejut mendengar kesanggupan kedua raja itu. Sebab Raja Singabarong adalah manusia yang aneh. Ia seorang manusia yang berkepala harimau. Wataknya buas dan kejam. Sedang Kelanaswandana adalah seorang raja yang berwajah tampan dan gagah, namun punya kebiasaan aneh, suka pada anak laki-laki. Anak laki-laki itu dianggapnya sebagai gadis-gadis cantik. Namun semua sudah terlanjur, Dewi Sanggalangit tidak bisa menggagalkan persyaratan yang telah diumumkan. Raja Singabarong dari Kerajaan Lodaya memerintah dengan bengis dan kejam. Semua kehendaknya harus dituruti. Siapa saja dari rakyatnya yang membangkang tentunya akan dibunuh. Raja Singabarong bertubuh tinggi besar. Dari bagian leher ke atas berwujud harimau yang mengerikan. Berbulu lebat dan penuh dengan kutu-kutu. Itulah sebabnya ia memelihara seekor burung merak yang rajin mematuki kutu-kutunya. Ia sudah mempunyai selir yang jumlahnya banyak sekali. Namun belum mempunyai permaisuri. Menurutnya sampai detik ini belum ada wanita yang pantas menjadi permaisurinya, kecuali Dewi Sanggalangit dari Kediri. Karena itu ia sangat berharap dapat memenuhi syarat yang diajukan oleh Dewi Sanggalangit. Raja Singabarong telah memerintahkan kepada para abdinya untuk mencarikan kuda-kuda kembar. Mengerahkan para seniman dan seniwatinya menciptakan tontonan yang menarik, dan mendapatkan seekor binatang berkepala dua. Namun pekerjaan itu ternyata tidak mudah. Kuda kembar sudah dapat dikumpulkan, namun tontonan dengan kreasi baru belum tercipta, demikian pula binatang berkepala dua belum didapatkannya. Maka pada suatu hari ia memanggil patihnya yang bernama Iderkala. “Hai Patih coba kamu selidiki sampai bagaimana si Kelanaswandana mempersiapkan permintaan Dewi Sanggalangit. Kita jangan sampai kalah cepat oleh Kelanaswandana.” Patih Iderkala dengan beberapa prajurit pilihan segera berangkat menuju kerajaan Bandarangin dengan menyamar sebagai seorang pedagang. Mereka menyelidiki berbagai upaya yang dilakukan oleh Raja Kelanaswandana. Setelah melakukan penyelidikan dengan seksama selama lima hari mereka kembali ke Lodaya. “Ampun Baginda. Kiranya si Kelanaswandana hampir berhasil mewujudkan permintaan Dewi Sanggalangit. Hamba lihat lebih dari seratus ekor kuda kembar telah dikumpulkan. Mereka juga telah menyiapkan tontonan yang menarik, yang sangat menakjubkan.” Patih Iderkala melaporkan. “Wah celaka! Kalau begitu sebentar lagi dia dapat merebut Dewi Sanggalangit sebagai istrinya.” kata Raja Singabarong. “Lalu bagaimana dengan binatang berkepala dua, apa juga sudah mereka siapkan?” “Hanya binatang itulah yang belum mereka siapkan. Tapi nampaknya sebentar lagi mereka dapat menemukannya.” sambung Patih Iderkala. Raja Singabarong menjadi gusar sekali. Ia bangkit berdiri dari kursinya dan berkata keras. “Patih Iderkala! Mulai hari ini siapkan prajurit pilihan dengan senjata yang lengkap. Setiap saat mereka harus siap diperintah menyerbu ke Bandarangin.” Demikianlah, Raja Singabarong bermaksud merebut hasil usaha keras Raja Kelanaswandana. Setelah mengadakan persiapan yang matang, Raja Singabarong memerintahkan prajurit mata-mata untuk menyelidiki perjalanan yang akan ditempuh Raja Kelanaswandana dari Wengker menuju Kediri. Rencananya Raja Singabarong akan menyerbu mereka di perjalanan dan merampas hasil usaha Raja Kelanaswandana untuk diserahkan sendiri kepada Dewi Sanggalangit. Raja Kelanaswandana yang memerintah kerajaan Wengker berwajah tampan dan bertubuh gagah. Ia memerintah dengan adil dan bijaksana. Namun ada wataknya yang tidak baik, ia suka mencumbui anak laki-laki. Ia menganggap anak laki-laki yang berwajah tampan dan bertubuh molek itu seperti gadis-gadis remaja. Hal ini sangat mencemaskan pejabat kerajaan dan para pendeta. Menimbulkan kesedihan bagi para rakyat yang harus kehilangan anak laki-lakinya sebagai pemuas nafsu Raja. Patih Pujanggeleng dan pendeta istana sudah berusaha menasehati Raja agar meninggalkan kebiasaan buruknya itu namun saran mereka tiada gunanya. Raja tetap saja mengumpulkan puluhan anak laki-laki yang berwajah tampan. Pada suatu hari Raja Kelanaswandana memanggil semua pejabat kerajaan dan para pendeta. Ia berkata bahwa ia akan menghentikan kebiasaannya jika dapat memperistri Dewi Sanggalangit dari Kediri. Sebab semalam ia mimpi bertemu dengan gadis cantik jelita itu dalam tidur. Menurut para Dewa gadis itulah yang akan menghentikan kebiasaan buruknya mencumbui anak laki-laki. Seluruh pejabat dan pendeta menyetujui kehendak Raja yang ingin memperistri Dewi Sanggalangit. Maka ketika mereka mendengar persyaratan yang diajukan Dewi Sanggalagit, mereka tiada gentar, seluruh kawula kerajaan, baik para pejabat, seniman, rakyat biasa rela bekerja keras guna memenuhi permintaan Dewi Sanggalangit. Karena mendapat dukungan seluruh rakyatnya maka dalam tempo yang tidak begitu lama Raja Kelanaswandana dapat menyiapkan permintaan Dewi Sanggalangit. Hanya binatang berkepala dua yang belum didapatnya. Patih Pujanggeleng yang bekerja mati-matian mencarikan binatang itu akhirnya angkat tangan, menyatakan ketidaksanggupannya kepada Raja. “Tidak mengapa!” kata Raja Kelanaswandana. ”Soal binatang berkepala dua itu aku sendiri yang akan mencarinya. Ternyata ada penyusup dari kerajaan Lodaya. Mereka adalah para prajurit pilihan yang menyamar sebagai pedagang keliling. Namun sebelum melewati perbatasan, anak buah Patih Pujanggeleng sudah mengepungnya, karena prajurit itu melawan maka terpaksa para prajurit Bandarangin membunuhnya. Patih Pujanggeleng menghadap Raja Kelanaswandana. “Apa yang kau dapatkan?” tanya Raja Kelanaswandana. “Ada penyusup dari kerajaan Lodaya yang ingin mengorek keterangan tentang usaha Baginda memenuhi persyaratan Dewi Sanggalangit. Memang sudah diperintahkan kepada prajurit bahwa jika ia sedang berada di tamansari siapapun tidak boleh menemui dan mengganggunya, jika perintah itu dilanggar maka pelakunya akan dihukum mati. Sementara si burung mereka masih terus bertengger mematuki kutu-kutu dikepalanya, jika dilihat sepintas dari depan Raja Singabarong seperti binatang berkepala dua yaitu berkepala harimau dan burung merak. “Hai mengapa kalian ribut-ribut?” teriak Raja Singabarong. Tak ada jawaban, kecuali berkelebatnya bayangan seseorang yang tak lain adalah Raja Kelanaswandana. Raja Bandarangin itu tahu-tahu sudah berada di hadapan Raja Singabarong. Raja Singabarong terkejut sekali. “Hai Raja Kelanaswandana mau apa kau datang kemari?” “Jangan pura-pura bodoh!” sahut Raja Kelanaswandana. “Bukankah kau hendak merampas usahaku dalam memenuhi persyaratan Dewi Sanggalangit!” “Hem, jadi kau sudah tahu!” sahut Raja Singabarong dengan penuh rasa malu. “Ya, maka untuk itu aku datang menghukummu!” berkata demikian Raja Kelanaswandana mengeluarkan kesaktiannya. Burung merak yang bertengger di bahunya tiba-tiba melekat jadi satu dengan kepalanya sehingga Raja Singabarong berkepala dua. Raja Singabarong marah bukan kepalang, ia mencabut kerisnya dan meloncat menyerang Raja Kelanaswandana. Namun Raja Kelanaswandana segera mengayunkan cambuk saktinya bernama Samandiman. Cambuk itu dapat mengeluarkan hawa panas dan suaranya seperti halilintar. “Jhedhaaar…!” begitu terkena cambuk Samandiman, tubuh Raja Singabarong terpental, menggelepar-gelepar di atas tanah. Seketika tubuhnya terasa lemah dan anehnya tiba-tiba tubuhnya berubah menjadi binatang aneh, berkepala dua yaitu kepala harimau dan merak. Ia tidak dapat berbicara dan akalnya telah hilang. Raja Kelanaswandana segera memerintahkan prajurit Bandarangin untuk menangkap Singabarong dan membawanya ke negeri Bandarangin. Beberapa hari kemudian Raja Kelanaswandana mengirim utusan yang memberitahukan Raja Kediri bahwa ia segera datang membawa persyaratan Dewi Sanggalangit. Raja Kediri langsung memanggil Dewi Sanggalangit. “Anakku apa kau benar-benar bersedia menjadi istri Raja Kelanaswandana?” “Ayahanda… apakah Raja Kelanaswandana sanggup memenuhi persyaratan hamba?” “Tentu saja, dia akan datang dengan semua persyaratan yang kau ajukan. Ditambah lagi dengan hadirnya seekor binatang berkepala dua yang menari-nari liar namun indah dan menarik hati. Semua orang yang menonton bersorak kegirangan, tanpa terasa mereka ikut menari-nari dan berjingkrak-jingkrak kegirangan mengikuti suara musik. Demikianlah, pada akhirnya Dewi Sanggalangit menjadi permaisuri Raja Kelanaswandana dan diboyong ke Bandarangin di Wengker.
